Biobasics Question of the Week:
Today's Question: What is the importance of amino acid Proline in the formation of secondary structure of protein?
Biobasics solution:
As compared to other amino acids, Proline is a hydrophobic imino acid with the following structure:

This cyclic aliphatic structure produces a kink in the peptide chains, so this amino acid is found at turning points in the secondary structure of proteins. Secondly, being hydrophobic this amino acid is found at the outer surface of proteins.
